Lesley, the RFDS Queensland Hero in 2017, made great strides in the community as a dedicated nurse in the central western township of Jericho, Queensland. She also worked in helping those affected by drought and assisting the elderly in her community. Lesley praised the RFDS for delivering healthcare in regional, rural, and remote communities while using her RFDS Local Hero Awards grant, courtesy of Ergon Energy Retail, to help her community in a vital way. Lesley is well known in her community as a friendly, thoughtful, kind, and generous woman who is always willing to drop whatever she is doing to help someone in need. Lesley recalled being told about her nomination when she was at the Gympie Show with her family. “It was a total surprise; I honestly didn't know but was really proud to be recognised by the RFDS.” “People could not live comfortably full-time in a town like Jericho and the district without knowing RFDS would be there if they needed extra emergency care,” Lesley explains. Initially, Lesley used the grant to teach elderly locals how to use emerging technologies, such as computers. When the town population increased due to caravanners, she put the remaining grant money and additional fundraising towards three defibrillators (AED'S) throughout the town, one of which has already saved a life. When talking about how life has changed since becoming a RFDS Local Hero, Lesley proudly stated “It put Jericho on the map, it helped us to get future funding for other needs in our community.” “It created much awareness and helped to hone in on many things.” Lesley's plans have not stopped; she is currently working with the Men's Shed to create an official building and to hold morning tea sessions with a specific focus on mental health and the effects of social isolation. Lesley is also working on a plan to help those experiencing homelessness in the community, talking to other local charities about how to help. When asked what her message would be to those considering nominating someone Lesley has five simple words “Go ahead and do it!” Lesley is dedicated to getting the word out about how RFDS saves lives in remote and rural areas and encourage s people to be generous with their donations to RFDS. Lesley also took part in our Flying Doctor podcast in May 2022 where she spoke about her time as a remote area nurse, her dash to save her daughter's life, and earlier, of her father.
